Welcome to Module 1, Introduction to Developing Section 508 Compliant Web Content. In this module, you’ll learn how to determine which Section 508 requirements apply to different kinds of web page content. You'll also see why it’s important to incorporate Section 508 requirements into the design phase of your development projects. In addition, this module provides an overview of testing tools you’ll use during the rest of the course.

Anytime a government agency develops, buys, uses, or maintains electronic information, it must make sure that the information meets federal standards for being accessible to people with disabilities. These standards are based on Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. Some standards spell out what the content must include from a technical perspective. Others are functional, describing methods of access that must be available to people with disabilities.
In this course, you’ll learn about some of the barriers people with disabilities face when web content is not accessible. You will also learn about methods that make web pages accessible and Section 508 compliant. You’ll learn how to test web-based content to determine if it meets all Section 508 requirements that apply.
The course is divided into 11 topic areas that provide you with the information you need to meet Section 508 requirements and make sure the web content you develop meets the needs of all users.
